DESIGN FOR CHANGE + 3D

Lenticular has two main tricks up its sleeve, the ability to portray a sense of motion or change and the illusionary magic of simulated dimension. Both use nearly the same materials but have important differences in approach. Motion harnesses the viewer's movement to step through sequences of images in time, while 3D exploits binocular vision to construct depth. Recognizing when to use each technique and how to optimize your artwork accordingly is the key to making great lenticular prints. Read more about the Science Behind the Magic of Lenticular Printing.

MOTION LENTICULAR: Sequential Storytelling

Effects that involve change are known as motion effects. This can be a simple two-flip or a complex animation utilizing up to 30 frames for fluid motion. Motion lenticulars easily create narratives and excel at condensing time, revealing hidden information and creating memorable “aha” moments. Their interactive quality encourages viewers to more deeply engage with the work. See our tutorials on working with Flip and Animated lenticular prints.

3D: Dimension W/o Boundaries

Lenticular has the unique ability to create imagery that appears dimensional, floating in front of the print or receding deep into an interior world. 3D lenticular prints create a sense of volume where things overlap in space and you can see around the edges. A single 2D photograph can often be processed to create a 3D lenticular, as can layered design files and natural photographic sequences. Best of all 3D lenticular requires no special lighting or glasses. See our tutorial on photographing for 3D lenticular printing.

FINE ART LENTICULAR

Lenticular printing for galleries and museums

Our lenticular prints can be found in exceptional places - from the walls of the MoMA to the halls of the Smithsonian - projects for people and organizations that demand uncompromising quality. Because our origin is in the fine art world we share the attention to detail, process control and uncompromising material selection that are required for lenticular in demanding environments. We offer a broad range of optical materials sourced globally for clarity and reliable effects, pigment-based UV-stable inks that meet or exceed archival standards, and precision CNC cutting and finishing that make for a clean finished product. The result is lenticular work that holds up to scrutiny in demanding gallery and museum environments.

The IN-HOUSE Production Difference

We produce all of our large-format lenticular prints in our Metro Detroit production space, where lenticular is our sole focus. Unlike many lenticular printing companies who broker and outsource to other facilities we manage every step in-house. Quality lenticular printing requires close control of dozens of variables, and having a dedicated local team ensures clients are never disconnected from the process. Our singular focus makes it possible to take on complex projects and to respond decisively when deadlines are tight.

Large Format Lenticular

Parallax Printing specializes in large-format lenticular work designed to make an impact at scale. Defined as prints larger than 20” and up to 4x8’ large-format lenticular delivers on the immersive and interactive front. Experiencing life-size prints animate with your movement as you pass through a space or huge 3D environments that protrude into the room is especially captivating. Working at this scale introduces new challenges like maintaining registration over large surfaces, ensuring material consistency, and safely handling oversized sheets. Over the years, solving these challenges has become the foundation of our business. The result is uncompromising precision and quality at scale, prints that hold up in every detail, whether viewed at a distance or examined up close.
